This section of
the website will let you know when
and where I’m doing
author talks, panel discussions, or travel
advice sessions.
From time to time it will also let you know of
good travel
deals.
Three reliable European travel bargains
Great travel deals come and go, as anyone who
has tried to find a 50p flight on Ryanair will
know. But some bargains are reliably good value
year-round, and most do not require you to book
months in advance nor travel on a wet Wednesday
in November.
Bargain berths
Scotrail (www.scotrail.co.uk) is doing its
best to compete with the no-frills airlines
between Scotland and England. So it sells
berths on overnight sleeper trains from Fort
William, Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and
Glasgow to London Euston for £19 each
way; if you don't get it early, the price
may rise to £29 (the most I have paid)
or £39, but considering you get a bed
for the night and at least 400 miles of travel,
it's one heck of a deal.
Rail and sail to anywhere in Holland
The standard single fare from London Liverpool
Street to Harwich is £18.90. But for
only £25 you can catch this train,
sail across to Hook of Holland with Stena
Line, and continue by rail to any Dutch station.
You must book by phone, a week ahead, on
08705 455 455.
Lander bargain
Germany's "Lander-Tickets" are such
good value that you wonder why anyone bothers
taking to the autobahn. For a flat fare of
EUR21 (£15), up to five people can travel
anywhere in a single German state (though a
couple of the smaller ones are bundled together).
You can only catch slower trains, but since
you have from 9am to 3am the next day, that's
hardly a bore. The deal also covers most local
bus, tram and U-bahn connections. And best
of all, you can simply buy it at any staffed
station on the day.
