Cuba in Focus

(Latin America Bureau, second edition, 1997)

No country is so closely identified with a single figure as Cuba is with Fidel Castro. He began his revolutionary career over half a century ago. Since "El Comandante" and Che Guevara prevailed on New Year's Day 1959, he has dominated the island. Cuba has been transformed from its days as a wretched US satellite into a proudly independent nation, albeit one where hardly anything works quite as it should. For example, the railway network makes Britain's look a model of order and efficiency: if you arrive in roughly the right town on approximately the right date you can count yourself lucky.
With Emily Hatchwell, I wrote Cuba in Focus to delve deeper into the republic and its complexities of creaking industry and ideology.
